10 Healthy Baking Recipes

With many activities being limited due to the Pandemic, many people turned to at-home baking as a new (or revived) hobby in 2020! While home-made is certainly better tasting (and healthier!) than prepackaged, many recipes call for lots of processed sugar and refined flours that can be detrimental to our health and make weight management more difficult.

There are many ways to enjoy your favorite baked treats at home, without feeling guilty or experiencing energy swings! Here we have a breakdown of Wellory’s Top Ten favorite baking recipes! From cookies to breakfast muffins, we’ve got you covered on healthy, whole-food alternatives to all your favorite baked treats.

1. Healthy Blueberry Banana Muffins

Muffins are a common breakfast for many Americans, but many recipes and pre-packaged options are loaded with sugar and ultra-refined oils, leading to energy crashes and inflammation. These homemade muffins are easy to make, high in fiber, and naturally sweetened with low-glycemic coconut sugar, applesauce, and whole blueberries! Bonus, they’re vegan, too!

2. Homemade GF Bagels

A gluten-free twist on the classic bagel! This recipe uses cassava flour, which is made from the root vegetable yuca (or cassava root). It is one of the best alternatives for gluten-free baking, with its mild taste that creates a finished product similar to wheat-based goodies. Enjoy toasted with unsweetened almond butter, or a cashew-based cream cheese and smoked salmon!

3. Baked Oat Squares

High in fiber and protein, these squares are perfect for grab-and-go breakfast! They travel well - make a batch for camping, road trips, backpacking, and air travel! They are a hit with kiddos too!

4. Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

Get your pumpkin-fix anytime of the year with these yummy, gluten free cookies (if pumpkin spice is your jam, you can add cinnamon to the recipe!)

5. Chocolate Caramel Shortbread Bars

Technically not a “baked” good, since this recipe is no-baking required, it still hits the spot when you’re looking for a sweet treat that doesn’t leave you strung-out on sugar! The caramel is made from whole-foods like dates and maple syrup. Pro Tip! This luscious caramel can also be used over your favorite dairy-free ice cream!

6. Chocolate Avocado Cookies

Avocado? Cookies?! That's right! You can get the yummy benefits of avocado from these delicious cookies. These babies are fudgy, gluten free, and sweetened with low-glycemic coconut sugar.

7. Black Bean Brownies

OK what?! Now black beans in brownies?! Sounds crazy, but these brownies will absolutely blow your mind with their divine fudgy texture and rich chocolaty goodness. Black beans are super high in protein and fiber, so you can feel good about indulging.

8. Banana Oat Cookies

Another hit with the kiddos, these cookies are everything you want in a cookie - chewy, soft, and just the right amount of natural sweetness from bananas! Optional additions include chocolate chips, unsweetened cranberries, or walnuts!

9. Sweet Potato Muffin

Another delicious option for breakfast on-the-go or post-workout recovery, these muffins are packed with complex carbs, fiber, and beta carotenes from sweet potato. Substitute one “flax egg” (1 TBS ground flaxseed + 3 TBS water) to make this recipe vegan!

10. Chocolate Zucchini Cake

Looking for more effortless ways to incorporate veggies into your day? This cake is for you! Bring it to your next BBQ, and no one will suspect there's actually veggie in that chocolate cake!
